Return to Blog Who dominates the New Zealand mobile market Q3 2016?

The NBR and the NZ Herald reported on Spark’s youth-oriented mobile phone operator ‘Skinny’ as it issued rebrand news this week.

So this is a perfect time to update our ever-popular blog posts about the mobile market share in NZ.

There are no rules around reporting so these new figures span 17 months but they are the most up to date available.

In May 2015, 2degrees reported 1.300,000 active customers.

For it’s full year ending 30 June 2016, Spark said it had a total of 2,293,000 mobile customer connections, or which 1,198,000 (52.34%) were per-pay, with that pre-pay number including +/- 200,000 Skinny customers.  Spark also recently reported its ARPU (Average Revenue Per User Per Month) was $47.19 for a contract customer and $11.87 for pre-pay.

For its June 2016 quarter, Vodafone reported a total 2,402,000 mobile customer connections, of which 1,453,210 (60.5%) of were pre-pay.

This week – September 2016 – Skinny general manager Ross Parker confirmed that 200,000 people have used a phone connected to a pre-pay Skinny account in past month.

So there we have it. Back in 2014 we reported that Spark said it had a total of 1.81 million (920,000 on contract, 895,000 prepay), compared to the claim on Vodafone’s own website to have had 2.3m customers at the same period.

Spark is gaining huge ground on Vodafone with just 100,000 connections between them.
